Kenneth Carol Talent Agency (now Kenneth Carol Agency) was founded in Hollywood, CA in May 1985, as an actors extra casting agency. Our primary goal was to help aspiring actors get inclusive roles in more mainstream funded movies and television programs. Although at the time we were not a SAG agency (another story), we worked with a lot of upcoming executive producers and producers who were involved in the budding independent production scene. Having been instrumental in casting several "B" films, a few of which made some real noise, we wanted more. So we kept pushing open the 'cracked' door until we got our big break.
In late 1986 early 1987, our big break came when a Hollywood iconic comedian wanted to showcase the college life of his sitcom daughter. This led to being given an opportunity to act as sub-casting agent for "extras" that ultimately led to a few extras going on to reoccurring roles. Kenneth Carol became instantly recognizable as the minority firm to be with if you were not a non-SAG black actor.
In 1990, we opened up a music branch in my hometown of Flint, Michigan. It was at that time we were offered an opportunity by a friend to oversee her sons' desire to be a rapper... Eric Breed. We not only represented him, we financed and promoted his first few single releases. One day during one of our conversations about his future he told me "Ken... 'ain't no future in yo frontin' bro I gotsa be me (which became the title of his mega hit) ." He subsequently released a record on SDEG Records distributed by Ichiban Records that went on to become a commercial success selling an estimated 4 million singles. The following year he released his second radio hit "Just Kicking It" featuring Ken as his muse citing his oversight as the agency's president who guided him in the right direction. Sadly due to a conflict in personal viewpoints, we had to release him, but his foundation was solidly in place for success.
In 1992, we blended our agency into a full service 5 person talent agency at one point representing over 100 clients: models, multi-genre recording artists, jazz artists, actors, producers, writers, and directors. We promoted country western concerts via one of our divisional companies (Sun Mountain Entertainment), utilizing Nashville's famous original talent agency, Buddy Lee Attractions. In addition, we represented a Stellar Award winning performer and a choreographer, and briefly for a few months a multi Grammy winning singer (now deceased).
In 2001, we moved the California satellite office, and the Michigan office to Georgia, and turned our full attention to representing recording artists and actors. Eventually in 2005, we had to close the acting unit and focused on recording artists and musicians. For the better part of two decades we have celebrated our success with a few very commercially successful talented artists in the genres of EDM, Soul, R&B, and Vegas impersonators. Since 2012 we have concentrated our representation in the genre of jazz.
